BIKE MADRID LISBON GRAVEL TOUR

Imagine biking from the capital of Spain, Madrid, to the capital of Portugal, Lisbon in 16 days, finishing at the westernmost point of Europe–Roca Cape; over 1.230 kilometers of wavy roads through the central mountainous system of the Iberian Peninsula until reaching the Atlantic ocean.

The Iberian Peninsula is one of Europe’s best locations to cycle. With its best secrets still to be found, spectacular mountain roads that go for kilometers, and mild weather unlike no other place in Europe; this is a scenic ride equal to none.

Welcome to Spain!

Arrive at Madrid  Airport and our guide will be waiting to take you to your first accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore the city and prepare your bike and equipment. Just before dinner, you’ll be given a briefing about the days to come and dinner awaits you at a local restaurant.

DAY 2

Madrid to miraflores

The Adventure Begins Here…

Start at the center of Madrid, in Plaza del Sol, aside the km 0 landmark where all the roads leave from Madrid. Following some pedestrian streets and some parks (as the known Parque del Retiro), the route goes north circling the Anillo Verde, in the direction of the town Soto del Real. Cycling through beautiful golden fields away from the stress from the big city, the goal is to reach the Miraflores at 1.100 m of altitude in the  Guadarrama Mountain.

DAY 3

Miraflores to Cercedilla

Exploring the “Cuenca Alta Manzanares Regional Park”

Leaving Miraflores de la Sierra, near the Guadalix River starts a nice uphill forest track between pines and oak trees. This day is marked by high mountain scenarios with strong possibilities of encountering horses, cattle and wild life. With nice tracks between small waterfalls and greenish hoods, long uphill sections and fun descents, this is a day to remember. The finish of a beautiful day in the mountains occurs with a long downhill and arrive in Cercedilla, with an impressive + 1.900 m overall ascent.

Cercedilla to ávila

Ávila, Surrounded by walls

On this day, embark on an exhilarating gravel biking adventure from Cercedilla to Avila in a 105 km stage,  traversing the stunning landscapes of the Guadarrama mountain range. Feel the crisp mountain air as you pedal through picturesque trails, surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking views.  As you approach Ávila, the medieval charm of its ancient walls welcomes you to a destination steeped in stories. This gravel biking journey promises not just physical exertion, but a deep connection with nature and a sense of accomplishment as you reach the historic city of Ávila.

Ávila to Barco D´Ávila

Today You´re going to enter gredos mountain range

Leaving from the medieval city of Ávila, descending by the streets along the ancient walls the direction is west, entering a forest track along the Rio Adaja. This is another day cycling on high mountain tracks, with the highest passage at 1.688 m at Sierra de Gredos Regional Park, which will provide you with wonderful and beautiful landscapes. This will be the longest stage with a distance of 124km, putting endurance capacity to the test. Finally, the route reaches Barco d’Ávila, a historical villa within this mountain range.

Barco D´Ávila to La Alberca

Get Ready to Adventure

Today is a breathtaking gravel biking adventure from Barco D’Ávila to Alberca! As journey unfolds, you’ll traverse a diverse terrain, from charming cobblestone paths to winding dirt trails, offering a perfect blend of challenge and exhilaration. As you pedal, be prepared to be captivated by the ever-changing landscape – lush green meadows, dense forests, and quaint villages dotting the route. After 110 km, finally  you reach Alberca, for a rest in the end of your day.

La Alberca to Trevejo

The Beautiful Villages of the Countryside

In this stage of the tour and with almost half of the traverse completed it’s time to enjoy cycling through small villages, which seems to be stuck in the Middle Ages, still with a lot of the pure way of living. The Sierra da Gata offers nice tracks and astonishing photo opportunities during a nice day’s ride. We finish  the stage is in Trevejo.

Trevejo to Manteigas

The Hidden Medieval Tresures of Portugal

Beautiful day through this region full of Portugal’s most iconic Historical Villages. Discover Sortelha, this amazing medieval village of granite with an impressive castle! Medieval stone roads and single tracks in valleys between villages will delight cyclists. Entry to the higher mountains of Portugal through beautiful forests and arriving in the picturesque village of Manteigas lying on a glacial valley! This is a great stage!

Manteigas to Piodão

From the glaciar valley to the enchanting village of Piodão

Leaving the village of Manteigas after a rejuvenating day of rest, cross mountain roads that reveal stunning panoramas of the largest glacial valley in Europe and birthplace of the Zêzere river. Cycle through scenes straight out of a postcard, where grazing sheep and goats fill the mountain landscape, capturing the essence of rural life. End your trip in the charming village of Piodão, where its stone houses blend perfectly with the natural splendor that defines this unforgettable gravel cycling experience.

Piodão to Miranda do Corvo

One of the most challenging days

Today’s stage will be one of the most challenging of the entire tour, with the greatest ascent and descent accumulated. Starting in the charming village of Piodão, cross rolling landscapes decorated by giant windmills and cycle along mountainous roads. As you pedal, the picturesque scenery reveals itself, revealing the idyllic village of Góis, surrounded by nature. The route continues, taking you to the final destination, Miranda do Corvo, where the beauty of the surroundings mirrors the feeling of accomplishment of your gravel adventure.

Miranda do Corvo To Tomar

The castle and the monastery

On this day, leave Miranda do Corvo towards the charming streets of Penela, and discover the historical beauty of its castle. Each pedal stroke not only propels you forward, but also reveals the diverse and captivating beauty of the Portuguese countryside. As you cycle along this enchanting journey, enjoy the scenery, green hills and gravel paths that lead you to majestic Tomar. This city reveals the imposing Convent of Christ, testimony to Portugal’s rich history.

Tomar to Alcobaça

Crossing the natural park of serra dáire e candeeiros

Leave Tomar and start a day of limestone hills. It is a day spent entirely in the stone kingdom! The paths are flanked by stone walls built over hundred years! At the end of the day up to the last ridge of these mountainous terrains and look for the first time to the Atlantic Coast! Arrive at Alcobaça, a famous by the Monastery or Royal Abbey of Santa Maria, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Alcobaça to Lourinhã

The coast and the magestic atlantic ocean

Leave Alcobaça’s impressive collection of medieval buildings and cycle through São Martinho do Porto, with its picturesque bay, which forms a natural shell-shaped harbor and flanks the reflective waters of Lagoa de Óbidos. As you travel through this mesmerizing landscape, let yourself be captivated by the ever-changing hills and coastal panoramas until you reach Lourinhã, known for its dinosaur fossils. Rest and enjoy the magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Lourinhã to Cabo da Roca (Cascais)

Enjoy the last stage of this epic adventure

The last day of this epic journey, and for those who were able to ride for 13 stages through the mountains of Iberian Peninsula this is a great day to watch the Atlantic Ocean! Roads and paths over the sea, trails on the cliffs and beaches make this a unique and different day on this long journey. Finally, the arrival to Roca Cape, the westernmost point of Europe! Celebration and transfer or ride to a Hotel in Cascais.
