Bike Madrid to Lisbon Road
The Bike Madrid Lisbon Road is considered one of the most epic adventures in Europe. Riders embark on a 1,100 kilometer journey, biking from Madrid, the capital of Spain, to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, in 11 days. The route is divided into nine guided stages that take you over the Castilian Divide mountain range, including famous cols from ‘La Vuelta a España’ and lesser-known gems in Portugal. You’ll chase the sun along the magnificent Atlantic coast to reach Europe’s westernmost point – Roca Cape.
The Iberian Peninsula is an ideal location for cycling, with spectacular mountain roads that go for kilometers and mild weather that sets it apart from any other place in Europe. This route provides an excellent opportunity to explore some of Europe’s best-kept secrets, with diverse landscapes and stunning views of mountain ranges. As you cross the interior of Spain and Portugal, you’ll discover rich historical sites that transport you back in time to previous centuries. WELCOME TO MADRID!
At the start of our Bike Madrid to Lisbon Road Tour, you’ll touch down at Madrid Airport, our guide will be waiting to greet you and take you to your first accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, you will have the opportunity to explore the city and prepare your bike and equipment. Just before dinner, you will receive a briefing about the upcoming days, followed by a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

Madrid to Segóvia
THE ADVENTURE BEGINS HERE…
Begin your journey from the heart of Madrid, at Plaza del Sol, next to the iconic Km 0 marker, which marks the point from where all roads radiate out of the city. As you embark on your adventure, you will stroll along charming pedestrian avenues and meander through scenic parks, including the renowned Parque del Retiro. The path will then lead you northwards, encircling the lush Anillo Verde until, after just a few kilometers and an hour into the trip, the road takes a determined ascent toward the majestic Guadarrama Mountains. Conquering these undulating hills will be the exhilarating highlight of your day, culminating in your arrival at your next lodging destination.

Segóvia to Ávila
ÁVILA, SURROUNDED BY WALLS
Our day begins with a steady climb, persisting through the captivating hills of Guadarrama, a formidable 700-meter challenge that promises an equally exhilarating descent. As we pedal onward, we are surrounded by the splendor of golden fields, a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Our ultimate destination is the enchanting city of Ávila, a cultural gem nestled along our route. Throughout the journey, we will travel through mountainous roads within the Central Iberian System, bidding farewell to the imposing Guadarrama mountain as we move ahead.

Ávila to Barco D´Ávila
TODAY YOU’RE GOING TO ENTER GREDOS MOUNTAIN RANGE
Starting from the medieval city of Ávila, we descend through the streets along the wall towards the west, ready to embark on another day of cycling on high mountain roads. The beauty of the landscapes and the countless kilometers we cover alongside the Tormes River, with its Roman bridges and quaint villages nestled alongside the Zapatero Massif, make it easy to forget that this is a long day with well over 100 km of cycling. However, after this long stage, we reach Barco d’Ávila, a historical town nestled within this mountain range.

Barco D´Ávila to Alberca
ENTERING THE NATURAL PARK LAS BATUECAS—SIERRA DE FRANCIA
In fourth stage of this adventure, there is a challenging obstacle – the Béjar Mountain with a high passage at 1,600 m. This day involves difficult climbs, winding and isolated roads, resulting in slow progress through the mountains, but always full of emotions. You’ll also encounter oak forests and the picturesque Candelário Villa. After passing through the valley before the Hurdes region, there is a long climb of over an hour to reach Alberca, and enter the Sierra de Francia Natural Park. Finally, it’s time to rest!

Alberca to Sabugal
PORTUGAL, HERE WE GO!
Today is going to be a long day, but we’re almost halfway there. We’ll be continuing the climb from yesterday, which is the final climb. This climb will take us over 800m to reach the Peña de Francia, an epic climb from the Spanish Vuelta with a height of 1750m. Once we complete this climb, we’ll be traveling on deserted roads in one of the most remote regions of the Peninsula, Sierra de Gata. Finally, we’ll cross over into Portugal and quickly reach the city of Sabugal.

Sabugal to Piodão
THE HIGHEST PEAK IN CONTINENTAL PORTUGAL!
It’s a beautiful day to explore the historical villages of Portugal. You can start your journey by visiting Sortelha, a stunning medieval village made of granite, which also has an impressive castle. Then, you can go to the highest mountain in Portugal, passing beautiful forests and the picturesque village of Manteigas, which lies in a glacial valley. This is also the highest point in Portugal, with an altitude of over 2,000 meters, which makes for the longest descent of the entire trip until you reach Vide Village, which is located at 300 meters above sea level. Finally, the stage ends at Piodão, the most beautiful schist village in Portugal, after a climb. Piodão is located in an unbelievable valley, with small houses stuck in its hillside.

Piodão to Miranda do Corvo
CROSSING CENTRAL PORTUGAL AND ENJOYING NATURE
This stage takes you through the central schist mountains system of Portugal and offers great scenery. The route follows rounded ridges near 1,000 meters and offers views of windmill parks. This is the last day above 1,000 meters, and you’ll see a great variety of mountain scenery and typical villages. After that, the scenery changes radically as you enter a hilly region with a karst landscape that dominates the next stages with its olive groves and holm oak. You’re in the limestone kingdom!

DAY 9
Miranda do Corvo to Óbidos
THE COAST AND THE MAJESTIC ATLANTIC OCEAN!
Starting from Miranda do Corgo, we quickly leave the limestone hills and finally reach the ocean. After descending from the last ridge of these mountainous terrains, we reach the mesmerizing Atlantic Road. Our journey unfolds like a coastal tapestry. Now, it is time to head south with our coastline guiding us, and cycle through the Atlantic Road amongst the vast pine tree forest. Here, we’ll visit the typical coastal villages of São Pedro de Moel, Nazaré (now famous for its giant waves), and Foz do Arelho, which enchants with its lagoon and beach vistas, inviting us to enjoy the scenery. Finally, Óbidos graces our route, with its medieval walls and cobblestone streets whispering tales of history.

Óbidos to Cabo da Roca (Cascais)
ENJOY THE LAST STAGE OF THIS EPIC ADVENTURE
We have finally reached the last stage of our journey. Today, we will begin by crossing the lake of Óbidos and head towards the coast. This is a significant day for those who have ridden for 9 days through the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula. We will enjoy quiet roads along the sea, cliffs, beaches, and local fishing villages, which will make this a unique and memorable day. We will conclude the day by arriving at Roca Cape, the westernmost point of Europe, where we will celebrate before transferring or riding to our hotel in Cascais.
