Rwanda Gorilla Trekking
There are moments in life that shift something inside you. We talk about quiet, breath-held moments where the world pauses and you know you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. Meeting Rwanda’s mountain gorillas in their misty, forested home is one of those moments. This journey leads you there, step by step. Over nine immersive days, you’ll hike across the landscapes that define Rwanda: from the lush rainforests of Nyungwe, to the calm waters of Lake Kivu, to the fertile slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. You’ll walk through rice fields and eucalyptus forests, cross rivers and crater rims, sleep by the lake, and rise with the mist. Along the way, there’s time for connection with local communities, ancient traditions, and the rhythm of the land. And then, one morning, you’ll stand in the forest as a silverback emerges from the green. You’ll watch a mother cradle her young. You’ll hear the low rustle of a troop moving through bamboo. It’s raw, intimate, humbling, and it lingers in a way few things do. Rwanda is the land of a thousand hills. But more than that, it’s the land of a thousand quiet revelations, and this is your invitation to walk among them.

DAY 1
Arrival
Welcome to Rwanda!
There’s something special about that first breath of air in a new country. The feeling that something unforgettable is about to begin. Our guide will be waiting for you at Kigali International Airport and will transfer you straight to your hotel. Take your time to check in, refresh, and ease into the gentle rhythm of Rwanda. If you find yourself with a bit of energy and curiosity after the journey, Kigali is a city that rewards wandering. You might be drawn to the quiet reflection of the Genocide Memorial, or the vibrant colours and textures of Kigali’s art scene. A walk through Nyamirambo could lead you to a women’s cooperative or a café where every cup has a story. Or maybe the birdsong will guide you toward a peaceful corner of green, like Umusambi Village or Nyandungu Eco Park. Take this time to wander, rest, or just follow your curiosity and let Rwanda begin to introduce itself.

DAY 2
King’s Palace visit in Nyanza
Explore the Royal Traditions and Hike to Ramera Hill
This morning, we leave the city behind and head south to Nyanza, once the beating heart of Rwanda, when the country was still a monarchy. Here, history feels close. The King’s Palace Museum offers a rare glimpse into Rwanda’s regal past, with a striking reconstruction of the traditional royal residence: a vast, beehive-shaped thatched house that once welcomed dignitaries and whispered secrets of a kingdom. In the fields nearby, you’ll meet the Inyambo cattle. Their keepers still tend to them with care and ritual, singing songs that guide their graceful movements in slow, ceremonial rhythm. It’s a living tradition, quietly powerful and deeply Rwandan. After lunch, we lace up our boots for a hike along the “Big View” trail. The path winds through gentle farmland before rising to Ramera Hill, where a wide, green silence opens around you. At the summit, a panoramic view stretches in all directions. Later in the afternoon, we continue by road toward Huye, arriving in time to settle in and unwind, with the day’s stories still fresh on your skin and in your step.

DAY 3
Nyungwe National Park
Into the Heart of Nyungwe: Rainforest Adventures & Hidden Falls
We begin the day with a scenic two-hour drive into the lush highlands of Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. The air changes as we climb. It became cooler, denser, and filled with the scent of earth and mist. This ancient forest is alive with movement: rustling leaves, bursts of birdsong, and, if we’re lucky, a glimpse of chimpanzees or one of the twelve other primate species that call this place home. Our first hike begins at the Uwinka Visitor Centre, where we’ll set off on a loop that takes us deep into the forest. The highlight: a walk across the suspension bridge, high above the canopy, with sweeping views over a sea of green. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also the option to try Rwanda’s longest zipline with 2 km of pure adrenaline across four thrilling stages. After lunch, we head deeper into the forest on a second trail that leads us to Ndambarare Waterfall. The path winds through dense vegetation, past tree ferns, lichens, and flowering plants that thrive in the cool, misty air. You might catch sight of the black-and-white colobus monkey leaping through the trees, or hear the call of the brilliant Rwenzori turaco echoing through the canopy. When you finally reach Isumo Falls, the sound is the first thing you notice. A thundering rush of water that fills the space with energy and awe. As the day winds down, we take a short drive to Nyuungwe, where we’ll spend the night surrounded by silence, stars, and forest.

DAY 4
Nyamasheke
Exploring the blue waters of Lake Kivu
This morning, we’ll leave behind the misty highlands of Nyungwe and begin a journey westward, descending gently through rural villages where life moves to the rhythm of the land. Along the way, there’s time to pause, connect, and exchange smiles. Moments that offer a quiet window into everyday life in Rwanda. It’s not a show, but something simpler and more honest: people living close to the earth, in communities shaped by tradition, resilience, and warmth. As the forest thins and the air warms, the landscape shifts. The hills open toward Lake Kivu, revealing calm blue waters that stretch to the horizon. Nestled in the heart of East Africa, Lake Kivu is one of Rwanda’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Your accommodation for the night is tucked along the lakeshore, a peaceful eco-resort where sustainability meets comfort in the best possible way. Here, the soundtrack changes: gentle waves lapping the shore, birds calling from nearby trees, the hush of wind in the leaves. It’s a place made for slowing down. Whether you choose to take a dip, watch the light dance on the water, or simply sit and breathe it all in, this is your moment to rest, recharge, and let Lake Kivu work its quiet magic.

DAY 5
Congo Nile Trail
Discover rural trails and experience a lakeside cruise
Today’s journey takes us along one of Rwanda’s most scenic and soulful paths, the Congo Nile Trail. Covering 22 km between Nyamasheke and Kumbya, the trail winds through quiet lakeside tracks, open farmlands, and warm village communities, where waves and greetings come as naturally as the breeze. As you walk, the rhythm of the countryside takes over. The trail passes through the fertile Kamiranzovu Valley, where rice fields ripple in the wind, and crosses the Karundura River, a tranquil moment surrounded by nature. It’s a day to move with intention but without rush, one foot in front of the other, letting the landscape tell its story. Eventually, the path leads you to the shores of Lake Kivu, where we’ll stop for a relaxed lunch at the peaceful Kumbya Kivu Life Eco-Lodge. After some time to rest and take in the view, we’ll set off again, but this time by boat. An early evening cruise will carry us across the lake to our accommodation for the night, as the light softens and the water turns to gold

DAY 6
Congo Nile Trail
Discover Buhari, a hidden waterfall
We begin the day with a short warm-up hike across the peninsula, where the early morning light dances on the lake’s surface and the forest slowly comes alive. From there, a quick boat ride takes us to the starting point of today’s journey: a 20 km stretch of the Congo Nile Trail that winds through lush hillsides and quiet shoreline paths. It’s a day of movement and discovery. As we walk, the views shift between wide lake panoramas and intimate moments of forest shade and village life. One of the day’s highlights is the Buhari Waterfall, a hidden cascade nestled deep in nature — a perfect spot to pause, breathe, and feel the energy of the water all around you. By late afternoon, we arrive in Karongi, a laid-back lakeside town where we’ll spend the night. The setting sun casts a golden glow across the water, and for those still feeling active, there’s the option to glide across the lake on a gentle sunset kayak session. Smooth, silent, and unforgettable. As night falls over the lake, it’s time to rest.

DAY 7
Transfer to Kinigi
Into the land of Giants
After several days of walking, exploring, and soaking in the lakeside serenity, today offers a slower rhythm. It is a chance to rest, reflect, and simply enjoy the ride as we leave Lake Kivu behind and journey northward. The road winds through Rwanda’s signature rolling hills, a landscape that feels like a painting in motion. Villages rise and fall with the terrain, children wave from the roadside, and the air gradually shifts as we climb toward the cooler, mist-covered foothills of the Volcanoes National Park. En route, there’s the option to stop at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, a beautifully designed research and conservation centre continuing the legacy of Dian Fossey. It’s a place where science, education, and passion come together to protect Rwanda’s most iconic and endangered inhabitants: the mountain gorillas. By late afternoon, we arrive in Kinigi, nestled at the base of the volcanoes. The landscape feels different here. It’s wilder, quieter, and full of anticipation. Tomorrow holds one of the most extraordinary encounters of the journey. Tonight, we rest.

DAY 8
Mount Bisoke Volcano Hike
Ascend into the wild embrace of Volcanoes National Park
Today is all about the climb. After an early start, we set off to conquer Mount Bisoke, one of Rwanda’s most accessible and most rewarding volcano hikes. The trail begins gently, winding through lush montane forest before steepening as we gain altitude, step by step, toward the summit. The 7 km route to the top takes around four hours, climbing to an impressive 3,711 metres above sea level. It’s a challenging trek, but entirely doable for those with moderate fitness, and the payoff is unforgettable. At the summit, the world opens up to reveal a spectacular crater lake, still and silent, resting in the mouth of an extinct volcano. The air is crisp, the views stretch forever, and the feeling of standing here, above the clouds, surrounded by raw beauty, is something you’ll carry long after the descent. Along the way, you may encounter golden monkeys, rare alpine vegetation, and the ever-changing moods of the mountain, such as mist, sunlight, birdsong, and silence. The descent takes around two hours, and though your legs may be tired, your spirit will be lifted. Back at the base, there’s time to rest and relive the day with the quiet satisfaction that comes from reaching a summit, and the wide-eyed awe of having done it in one of Africa’s most spectacular landscapes.

DAY 9
Golden Monkey Trekking
Option 1: Golden Monkey Trekking
Today is yours to shape. At sunrise, we’ll transfer you to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, where the day begins with a safety briefing and last-minute coordination. From there, you’ll set off on the adventure you’ve chosen, and no matter which path you take, the day promises to be unforgettable. And no matter which adventure you choose, today is about more than just wildlife. If you’re looking for a relaxed but rewarding wildlife experience, golden monkey trekking is a perfect choice. These vibrant, playful primates are found only in the Virunga Mountains and Rwanda’s Gishwati-Mukura National Park, and their population is under threat due to habitat loss. Golden monkeys live in large, social troops of up to 100 individuals, led by a dominant male. You’ll often see them grooming one another, chasing through the bamboo, or foraging for their favorite treat, fresh bamboo shoots. Observing them in the wild is joyful, lively, and surprisingly intimate. A short, easy trek makes this a great option for those wanting something unique without the physical challenge.

DAY 9
Gorilla Trekking
Option 2: Gorilla Trekking
This is Rwanda’s most iconic wildlife experience, an extraordinary opportunity to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Led by expert guides and trackers, you’ll be assigned to a gorilla family and hike through the forested slopes of Volcanoes National Park to find them. Depending on the location of your assigned group, the trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. The terrain is often steep, muddy, and dense with vegetation, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Porters are available for $15 and can assist with backpacks, cameras, and navigating more difficult sections of the trail (their help is both practical and supports the local community). Coming face to face with a silverback, locking eyes with a curious youngster, or simply sitting quietly in the presence of a gorilla family is something that stays with you forever. It’s not just a hike, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment of connection and humility.

DAY 10
Departure
That’s it! Our Adventure comes to a close.
After nine days of trails, volcanoes, rainforest air, and lakeside stillness, it’s time to say goodbye. We’ll arrange your transfer back to Kigali, giving you space for a slow breakfast and a final glance at the mist-covered hills. Whether you’re flying home or continuing onward, you’re not leaving empty-handed. You take with you more than photos. You carry the quiet strength of the mountains, the warmth of strangers who became familiar, the rhythm of feet on Rwandan soil, and the stillness of a moment shared with something wild and rare. This wasn’t just a trip. It was a slow unfolding of landscapes, of stories, of self. And Rwanda? It always stays with you, long after the boots come off.
